The United States has positioned its military assets in three strategic areas of the world where it is able to ensure peace and protect freedom. They are,
- The South China Sea. The democratic Island of Taiwan, plus the sea lanes of the South China Sea, through which one third of the world’s maritime trade passes, are in need of protection. China is building up its forces to control both the island and the sea lanes. What to do? America can’t outbuild China when it comes to the number of warships placed in service. However, it can continue to improve its technology to stay out in front of China. Presently, America out paces China in the development of Artificial Intelligence. Also, America is superior to China in submarine technology, and warship and aircraft weaponry. Thus far, peace has held because of America’s strategic superiority. However, China is looking at the outcome of the presidential election to test America’s resolve in this part of the world.
- Europe and near Europe democracies. Nothing compares to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) for securing peace in Europe against the ever continuous advances Russia has pursued since the end of WW2. America is the centerpiece of NATO; and presently, it heads the effort to stop Russia from fully invading Ukraine, a free and democratic nation which has petitioned for membership in NATO. America supplies the major portion of weapons, training, and intelligence that helps Ukraine from folding to Russia’s violation of Ukraine’s national sovereignty. The outcome of the presidential election will determine America’s resolve to stick with Ukrainian sovereignty.
- The Middle East. There are two protagonists in the Middle East – Israel on the one hand and Iran on the other. America is the supplier of last resort for Israel. And Iran is the supplier to rebels throughout the Middle East who presently are attacking Israel. Israeli academic achievements, entrepreneurial creativity, breakthrough technology, and fierce resolve make Iran’s adventuring subject to enormous destruction, that is, if America continues its commitment to Israeli sovereignty. Presently, the Middle East produces one third of the world’s oil supply. It appears that the outcome of the presidential election will not interrupt America’s continuous support of Israel, notwithstanding Iran’s contribution to oil production, which is maybe one third coming directly out of the entire Middle East.
In Conclusion, it’s obvious that in global competition, it is America with her allies on one side and China, Russia, and Iran on the other. America is the one indispensable world player. Its tools in balancing world tensions are military and technological superiority ( including first rate diplomacy, and rigorous honesty in sharing information with the world). Anyone who would attempt to disrupt America in filling this role neither sees nor understands America’s essential part in keeping global peace. The present administration has succeeded in keeping and fortifying this balance. The outcome of the present presidential election will determine if this balance will continue.
